Speculation in the stock market.
- People were buying stocks "on margin"
- When companies started making less profit, people started panic-selling, causing an immediate drop in share prices.

Overproduction and underconsumption.
- Market became saturated after a while (one can only own that many vacuum cleaners)
- Demand decreased, and production was forced to slow down
- This reduced employment and the propensity to spend decreased.

Protectionist policies of Republican government.
- Ford-McCumber tariff placed taxes on foreign goods to protect domestic industries
- Other countries retaliated by also placing taxes on American goods
- This prevented trade between America and other countries
- This thus reduced American revenue.

Asset bubbles fueled by speculation.

Bubble burst led to stock market crash.

No insurance for banks, caused massive runs on banks after crash, causing banks to go into default. This created a serial banking crisis that spread globally.

Remaining banks tightened their loans, creating a liquidity trap. The inability to get loans made it hard to purchase homes, new businesses to form, etc. This led to less production, less employment, less consumption, more businesses failing, more unemployment and so on.

Protectionists trade policies in response to the above actually worsened and prolonged the depression.

Widespread droughts and infestations throughout our agricultural sector also caused a lot of people to default on their mortgages, and led to a lot of lost productivity. Never underestimate the economic effects of natural disasters.

it worked for 50 years before the depression, and people were kinda hoping that it will continue working in the future if only they could fix it. Nearly 100 years later, it seems that they were right.

Study it again. A vast progressive policy was implemented during the Depression. Big business was bullied, and threatened by FDR to toe the line or else.

The new progressive policies of FDR and the businesses benefited by the Smoot-Hawley Tariff were the two sides of the fascist coin. Even today remains the marriage between big government and big business. What you think of the great American capitalism, wasn't particularly free market, and had more in common with the economic policies of Hitler of Mussolini that a truly free market. Even what set of the depression, the central bank of the time is a feature of a corporatist/ fascist State rather than a free market.
